Proficiency testing, explained

Proficiency testing (PT) is how a laboratory shows, with evidence from outside, that its results agree with an independent value. A PT provider sends the same test items to many laboratories, scores each result against criteria fixed before the round, and reports back. These guides explain how that works, for the people who run PT schemes and for the laboratories that take part.
